Ever wanted to run through the spray from a fire hose or hydrant? You'll get your chance this summer. Sioux Falls police and fire departments are teaming up with the city's parks and recreation department to host a weekly Hydrant Block Party in various parks and neighborhoods through mid-August. The first block party kicked off at Bakker Park on Thursday, and the city is already planning more for next summer. Quissell said the parks and recreation department got the idea from Omaha, where it was well-received, and quickly got Sioux Falls' emergency responders involved.
All three departments β fire, police and parks β were involved in the planning, Clemens said. The block parties will be held in a different park or neighborhood every Thursday from 1 p.
Attendees are invited to play in the water sprayed from fire hoses and fire hydrants. Squirt guns, sponges and other water toys are also available, Quissell said. Kids will even get the chance to try their hand at spraying the powerful fire hoses, with adult supervision, of course. But kids weren't the only ones enjoying Thursday's block party.
